On Saturday, thousands of students and visitors from afar (majority white) gathered for the annual Keene Pumpkin Festival at Keene State College in New Hampshire. But ish quickly got out of hand, leaving many of the festivalgoers injured and arrested after police dressed in riot gear fired off tear gas on the students who rampaged the streets of the small New Hampshire community.
The violent riots went early into Sunday morning as unruly students flipped over cars, uprooted street signs, turned over dumpsters, started fires and raided the streets with mayhem. At one point, witnesses say some rioters were even throwing bottles and other objects at authorities.
Police got suited in SWAT gear before dismantling the chaotic scene with tear gas and pepper spray. And now it’s raising questions about race when compared to how the police in Ferguson responded to peaceful protesters after the shooting death of unarmed teen, Michael Brown.
